September 2007 saw the release of The Elves of Cintra, the second book in the Genesis of Shannara series, which comes out in paperback later this month!

As is customary for Terry when he does an event, he always reads from the book he is working on (ie. a book that is not yet in print). The same was true in September 2007, where he supported the release of The Elves of Cintra by doing events on the road but instead read to the audiences from The Gypsy Morph.

The Gypsy Morph, Book Three in the Genesis of Shannara series, will be released on August 26, 2008. But as many of you know, Terry and Del Rey enjoy releasing early excerpts of forthcoming books to entice readers.

This year is no exception, of course. The first excerpt, Chapter One of The Gypsy Morph, is now posted on the website!

Another excerpt will be posted on July 1st, and another one on August 1st. We will also have some additional fun things to share with you—but in time.

The Gypsy Morph Cover

Shannara Pushed Back

The World of Shannara, the guide of all things Shannara written by Teresa Patterson and approved of by Terry, has been pushed back to a Fall 2009 release. In Fall 2009, you can expect The World of Shannara and Landover #6 to be released right around the same day if not the same day.

Although this might be disconcerting to the fans who were looking forward to this revised and updated The World of Shannara, this will allow Terry and Del Rey to produce an even finer version of it.

Several years ago, Terry oversaw the completion of The World of Shannara, a fairly comprehensive guide to the Shannara world. Since that time Terry has written nine new novels that needed to be incorporated into the guide.

Del Rey this fall will be releasing an updated edition of The World of Shannara. It will have new paintings by artist Rob Alexander and new text by Teresa Patterson. Teresa has now included sections about Word/Void, Voyage, High Druid, and Genesis. The book will be released near the same time as The Gypsy Morph, this August 26th.

NY Comic Con

Terry and I are flying out to New York on Wednesday and we'll be there through Sunday. Terry is going to promote Dark Wraith of Shannara at the NY Comic Con, the second largest comic con in the world. He is really looking forward to it.

On Friday, he is signing at the Midtown Comics booth. On Saturday, he is on a Shannara panel in the afternoon—along with his editor Betsy Mitchell and the graphic novel's writer Robert Napton—which will be followed by a two-hour autograph signing. For those of you in New York or are going to be at the convention, please stop by and say hello!

February Ask Terry

Terry has finally returned from the wilds of France, the Indian Ocean, and Panama, and yesterday sent in his answers to your February questions. Visit the Ask Terry section of the website to read them, as well as all previous questions we've received over the years and Terry's answers to them.

The answers to the March questions will be posted sometime over this coming weekend.

Terry is also signing the pre-ordered copies of Dark Wraith of Shannara over the weekend. Shawn and The Signed Page will do their best to get the copies out to the fans before Shawn flies to NY Comic Con on Wednesday for six days.

Genesis of Dark Wraith

Dark Wraith of Shannara, the forthcoming graphic novel, has been in the works for two years. It took the collaborative efforts of several professionals to bring it to the fans, and that process may be of interest to some of you.

First, Terry has written a Dark Wraith Letter. It is now posted on the website on the Dark Wraith of Shannara page.

Second, posted along with that letter, is a few pages from the Making of section in Dark Wraith of Shannara. It is a PDF (you need Acrobat Reader) and can be downloaded HERE.

Buying Indomitable

With the Del Rey Newsletter going out two days ago, the website has been receiving a lot of email asking similar questions. Here are some of those questions and their answers:

Where can I find the short story Indomitable?
Indomitable is the Shannara short story that takes place after the events of The Wishsong of Shannara, where Jair Ohmsford must discover a way to end the residual evil of the Ildatch—at perhaps a dark consequence to himself. It sets up the events of Dark Wraith of Shannara. The short story was released as part of a hardcover anthology titled Legends II, which also had a number of great short stories from some of the genre's best writers. A year after its release, Indomitable then appeared in the paperback Legends II: Dragon, Sword, and King. Ask your local bookstore for it or order it online from the various booksellers that make it available.

Will Dark Wraith of Shannara be released in hardcover?
As of this moment, Dark Wraith of Shannara won't be offered as a hardcover. Sometimes if a comic book series or a graphic novel trade paperback do well, a publisher will produce a hardcover. Until we know how Dark Wraith is going to perform, we won't have any indication if Del Rey is going to produce a hardcover or let a small press publisher take a crack at it.

Will Terry be touring for the release of Dark Wraith of Shannara?
He won't be. He is in the middle of writing the new Landover novel and can't be separated from his surrogate child—the new book. But he is doing two events for the graphic novel. Read the Events page for more information. And if you want a signed copy, visit The Signed Page for more information.

Dark Wraith Poll

Dark Wraith of Shannara, the graphic novel taking place after the events of The Wishsong of Shannara and Indomitable, will be released on March 25th in all great bookstores and comic bookstores. It is an integral part of Jair Ohmsford's story, one in which the young man will be tested to his limits and whose experiences could drive him to darkness.

This week I will post a letter from Terry about the graphic novel, and a week or two before release I'll be posting 5-10 pages from Dark Wraith. You'll have a chance to see a bit of it before buying it.

Personally, I found the story that Terry wanted to adapt a great one; he went to a place that begged to be gone to and I'd just never thought of it before. As a former reader of the comic book genre, some of the pacing was off in two spots and the artwork ranged from utterly fantastic to "Wow, that panel needed more time." But all in all I am quite pleased with it and what Terry, Robert, and Edwin ended up completing in the end product. I give it a 7/10—a worthy project.

I know Terry really likes it, and he hopes you all do too. He has more plans for graphic novels if this one works out. Time will tell.

There are some great answers in there, and some insight into what Terry is planning for the forthcoming Landover novel.

Since Terry is not in the US and won't be until mid-March, the answers to February's questions won't be posted until late-March.

On a final note, Terry will be in New York City on April 19th for the NY Comic Con. He will be promoting Dark Wraith of Shannara, but he will also have two signings at the convention—one after the event, one at the Del Rey booth. Shawn Speakman, the infamous WebDruid, will also be in attendance, in case you'd like to say hello.

Terry will be attending the New York Comic Con only on Saturday, April 19th, where he will be promoting the release of Dark Wraith of Shannara. He will be part of a large Author Panel on Shannara and will be doing a signing afterward.

Book Three Title

From the moment Terry Brooks fans finished reading The Elves of Cintra, the website has received numerous emails asking what the title of Book Three would be in the Genesis of Shannara series. The original title Terry had come up with was too long, which led Terry and Del Rey to find a new title over the course of the last several months. That hunt is over—at least for the moment.

The third book in the Genesis of Shannara series is tentatively titled: The Gypsy Morph

As some of you remember, this was one of the titles bandied about for the book that would eventually be titled Armageddon's Children. But The Gypsy Morph fits much better for this third book than the first one, and it will be published in late August 2008. The Gypsy Morph is longer than the two previous books and will have 410+ pages. It also wraps up all storylines from the first two books.

The title could still change. But right now this is the title. A first glimpse of The Gypsy Morph will comes in March when Dark Wraith of Shannara is released.

A small note of trivia: The cover of The Gypsy Morph will be the first time the connection between Word/Void and Shannara will be made obvious (the "gypsy morph" is from Angel Fire East and the word Shannara will be beneath it).

Dark Wraith Interview

Dark Wraith of Shannara will be released on March 25, 2008. Terry will only be doing two events for its release, and that leaves a lot of Shannara fans unable to ask Terry their questions about this new graphic novel.

The World of Shannara

In 2001, Del Rey Books released a Shannara compendium titled The World of Shannara. It was a 206 page guide to Shannara, with painted illustrations and additional informations not found in the books. It incorporated information from the Old World through to the formation of the Druids and all the way up through The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara. It sold out rather quickly and has since been out of print.

That changes in September 2008. For several years, Terry and Del Rey have had plans to revise and update The World of Shannara, adding the High Druid of Shannara series and growing the Old World aspect seen in the new Genesis of Shannara series. It will be published as a new hardcover with a new cover for its dust jacket, and it will have about 48 pages more content than the one released in 2001. It will have new art, including Logan Tom, Angel, Kirisin, and Simralin. It will also connect and link the Word/Void series.

When more information is released about this, it will be posted here on the website! In the meantime, get ready for September 2008!
