New Book and Series Titles!
Del Rey and Terry have decided on the final titles of the next book/series. The next book will be called Bearers of the Black Staff, Book One of the Legends of Shannara duology. Bearers of the Black Staff takes place 500 years after the events in The Gypsy Morph, where the descendants of the valley survivors are finally confronted with the outside world and its multitude of dangers. The book is written and edited and is as we speak with the production editing team at Del Rey. Artwork has just been commissioned and after several months hopefully we'll have something to show you. Terry is as we speak writing the second book in the duology. It has a tentative title I cannot yet reveal but I think it matches up nicely with the first one. Terry hopes to be finished with the second book by April or May 2010. More about this will be revealed in the 2009 Holiday Letter, to be released soon. As you have probably surmised, the Genesis of Shannara series is complete at three books. Legends of Shannara will push the pre- First King of Shannara novels forward. There will be at least one or two more series after Legends that will bring the timeline up to Galaphile and the First Druid Council. We'll have to wait and see how Terry does it. In the meantime, I think you all are going to enjoy Bearers of the Black Staff! And in a month, around the New Year, Terry and I will be giving you all a fun gift. Get ready! Terry's Holiday Letter
Since I've been receiving a lot of email from fans about this, I thought I would simply put the issue to bed. Terry is doing a 2009 Holiday Letter. In it, he describes his last year of work and what work he plans on doing in the next few years. He talks about the two movies and where they stand, as well as discusses the illustrated version of Indomitable that Subterranean Press will be doing. I now have this letter and will be posting it on Thanksgiving, much earlier than I usually post it. But I have a great gift to give you all next month, so I'm not worried about spoiling too much by releasing the holiday letter early. I hope you all are okay with that. Ha! So log in on Thanksgiving. Terry Writing 2nd Book
Terry is writing Chapter 11 of what can be described as Genesis #5. #4 has been put to bed, its editing completed, now on its way to the production and art teams at Del Rey. Genesis #4 will be published August/September 2010. There is a small possibility that #5 will come on the heels six months later in Spring 2011 if Terry finishes it by April 2010. Since I know that Terry plans on being finished with #5 by Spring 2010, it is entirely up to Del Rey if the two-book set is published six months apart. More news when I have it! Auction: Terry Brooks Character Name
 More than two years ago, Terry offered a similar auction at BiddingForGood. The proceeds from the auction go to schools and similar non-profit entities around the world. For three weeks people could bid for the opportunity to have their name used in Terry's next Landover novel—what would eventually become this year's bestseller A Princess of Landover. There was a winning bidder. That person had an unusual email address though and Terry fell in love with it immediately. He offered the winner a much larger role in the book if he could use the email address handle—which did contain elements of the winner's real name—instead of the winner's actual name. That is how the annoyingly mute G'Home Gnome Shoopdiesel came to be. Terry is doing it again this year! This time for a forthcoming Shannara book! The question is: How much is it worth to be immortal? The Shannara series has been one of the most beloved fantasy series of all time. It is literally one of the foundational pieces of the genre. One can easily make the argument that without The Sword of Shannara the genre would not look the same, might not exist with the size it does now. After all it was Sword that defied other publishers and their belief that fantasy beyond Tolkien just couldn't sell. Genesis #4 Tentative Title
I've received quite a bit of mail from people who think they have discovered the title of Genesis of Shannara #4 on the Amazon.co.uk website. The title in question is Bearers of the Black Staff. Right now that is the tentative title. Tentative. Terry hasn't even finished his edits on Genesis #4 and I'm sure him and his editor will be talking about the title of the book soon. Many of Terry's original titles have been changed, and that might happen with this one. In my opinion, I actually like this title. Bearers of the Black Staff relates to one plot point out of many in the new book. I won't tell you what that plot point is. We'll see what happens! Genesis #4 Finished
Terry has finished his first draft on Book #4 of Genesis of Shannara. As reported earlier, Book #4 has a tentative title that won't be released until it is finalized. The story is the first book in a planned two-book set that takes place hundreds of years after the events of The Gypsy Morph. Terry finished Book #4 late last week and Judine gave an edit Terry has gone over it one more time. He has now given it to his editor, his agent and to his webmaster. Once he has done another solid edit and puts the book to bed for next year's publication, Terry will immediately jump into writing Book #5 in the series. If you want a taste of Book #4, you don't have long to wait. Terry Brooks Video Interview
 Terry visited the San Diego Comic Con and had a multitude of fans waiting for him to sign. A signing that was slotted to take one hour spread into just over two hours. I was really surprised at how many fans said the only reason they bought a Comic Con ticket was to see Terry. Other than the autographing session, Terry also took part on a panel and and interview conducted by yours truly. Terry talked about his return to Landover and dropped a few hints about what Book #4 of Genesis will be about. To watch the video interview, click HERE! The Gypsy Morph Paperback Released
 The Gypsy Morph, Book Three in the Genesis of Shannara series, has been released in mass market paperback and should be in fine bookstores everywhere! On a related note, Terry is about a week from finishing Book #4 in the Genesis of Shannara series, which will be published in 2010. It takes place several hundred years after the events of The Gypsy Morph and has all new characters. I will be posting a video on Friday of Terry talking about the next Genesis book, where he reveals a few tidbits about what the story is about. He plans on jumping right into Book #5 in Genesis sometime in September. But for now, if you haven't finished reading the first three-book storyarc in Genesis of Shannara, go out and buy Armageddon's Children, The Elves of Cintra and The Gypsy Morph, all in paperback now! Genesis of Shannara #4
As the publication date for A Princess of Landover quickly approaches, it is also the time where Terry nears close to finishing the next book. This is just a quick update. Terry is only three chapters shy of finishing Book #4 in the Genesis of Shannara series. It is set several hundred years after the events of The Gypsy Morph and it is the first half of a two-book tale that tells the story of civilization's survivors. He is really happy with this first book of the duology. When Terry finishes Book #4, he will then immediately begin writing Book #5 and hopes to have both done and fully edited by next summer. Terry has returned from a long trip to Spain where he spent most of his time dreaming up the storyline to the next Genesis of Shannara novel, set to come out in 2010. Hardcover Arrival
There is a whole string of events that take place before a new release hardcover book graces bookstore shelves. After the book has been edited and its pages proofed by the author, the book file is sent to the printing press where thousands of the book roll off of a line. A certain amount of books go to the publisher's warehouse and the rest go to book distributors and online booksellers around the country. In the case of Terry's new book, copies of The Gypsy Morph will arrive in bookstore receiving rooms a day or two before the August 26th release date—and even sometimes the book is placed on the shelves a bit early. Today when I checked my mail, my hardcover copy of The Gypsy Morph had arrived. Below is a picture of it alongside my other copies of the Genesis of Shannara series.  The arrival of this book means some independent booksellers who are on Del Rey's mailing list will receive hardcover copies of their own. It does not mean bookstores will have the book—not yet, anyway—but it does mean you may start seeing these copies online in places. Just an FYI. Labels: Genesis of Shannara, The Gypsy Morph
Book Three Title
From the moment Terry Brooks fans finished reading The Elves of Cintra, the website has received numerous emails asking what the title of Book Three would be in the Genesis of Shannara series. The original title Terry had come up with was too long, which led Terry and Del Rey to find a new title over the course of the last several months. That hunt is over—at least for the moment. The third book in the Genesis of Shannara series is tentatively titled: The Gypsy MorphAs some of you remember, this was one of the titles bandied about for the book that would eventually be titled Armageddon's Children. But The Gypsy Morph fits much better for this third book than the first one, and it will be published in late August 2008. The Gypsy Morph is longer than the two previous books and will have 410+ pages. It also wraps up all storylines from the first two books. The title could still change. But right now this is the title. A first glimpse of The Gypsy Morph will comes in March when Dark Wraith of Shannara is released. A small note of trivia: The cover of The Gypsy Morph will be the first time the connection between Word/Void and Shannara will be made obvious (the "gypsy morph" is from Angel Fire East and the word Shannara will be beneath it). September Ask Terry
Now that Terry has returned from his two tours and his three week vacation in Japan, he is once again chained to his writing desk with several different project due dates looming. To begin getting everything in line, he has answered your September questions on Ask Terry. He will also be answering your October questions shortly. Be sure to submit new questions for him to answer in early December. Terry also is writing an article for Writer's Digest, as well as finishing the last four chapters in Book Three of the Genesis of Shannara trilogy. He hopes to be done with the latter by Thanksgiving and it is the longest book of the three in the trilogy. And then he will start work on the sixth Landover novel in January.
