I wrote a post for Suvudu.com detailing how Terry and his publisher come up with book titles. You will be surprised to know that not every title has been Terry's original choice.
Click HERE to find out what the original titles of The Gypsy Morph and A Princess of Landover were! Labels: A Princess of Landover, Armageddon's Children, Bearers of the Black Staff, High Druid of Shannara, Legends of Shannara, Shannara, The Gypsy Morph Tuesday, October 20, 2009Auction: Terry Brooks Character Name More than two years ago, Terry offered a similar auction at BiddingForGood. The proceeds from the auction go to schools and similar non-profit entities around the world. For three weeks people could bid for the opportunity to have their name used in Terry's next Landover novel—what would eventually become this year's bestseller A Princess of Landover. There was a winning bidder. That person had an unusual email address though and Terry fell in love with it immediately. He offered the winner a much larger role in the book if he could use the email address handle—which did contain elements of the winner's real name—instead of the winner's actual name. That is how the annoyingly mute G'Home Gnome Shoopdiesel came to be. Terry is doing it again this year! This time for a forthcoming Shannara book! The question is: How much is it worth to be immortal? The Shannara series has been one of the most beloved fantasy series of all time. It is literally one of the foundational pieces of the genre. One can easily make the argument that without The Sword of Shannara the genre would not look the same, might not exist with the size it does now. After all it was Sword that defied other publishers and their belief that fantasy beyond Tolkien just couldn't sell. If you would like to have your name used in a forthcoming Shannara book, Terry invites you to click HERE! For me this is a huge deal. I love charity activity like this! Bid often! Best of luck to you! Labels: A Princess of Landover, Contest, Genesis of Shannara, Shannara Saturday, October 10, 2009September Ask Terry Q&A Posted

Terry has finished his first draft on Book #4 of Genesis of Shannara. As reported earlier, Book #4 has a tentative title that won't be released until it is finalized. The story is the first book in a planned two-book set that takes place hundreds of years after the events of The Gypsy Morph.
Terry finished Book #4 late last week and Judine gave an edit Terry has gone over it one more time. He has now given it to his editor, his agent and to his webmaster. Once he has done another solid edit and puts the book to bed for next year's publication, Terry will immediately jump into writing Book #5 in the series. If you want a taste of Book #4, you don't have long to wait. Terry is doing a short tour this year for the release of A Princess of Landover, and at those events he will be reading a chapter from Book #4 of Genesis. Click HERE to view his Events schedule! Here is an update on the forthcoming Terry Brooks The Signed Page online signing.
I hope to get all of the books later this week, as bookstores will start selling them on August 18th. I will then set them up as soon as I get them and notify Terry they are in and ready for his autographs. Since Terry is traveling to Con Version soon, he may not be able to sign the books before he leaves. If that happens, he will sign them when he returns from the convention, around August 27th. Also, those of you who are wishing signed copies, you better order them soon at The Signed Page. I won't be buying more copies after I do my initial pick-up later this week. I am a huge fan of maps. Always have been. There is something intrinsic about fantasy and the quest-type journey that demands a map to highlight where characters travel and events transpire.
Del Rey, for the release of A Princess of Landover, decided to update the map for the world of Landover. And I love it. It is another Russ Charpentier map. Russ has been doing professional mapping for long years, and he brings a beauty to his work that is almost unmatched in the business. Decide for yourself: ![]() Map by Russ Charpentier What do you think? Like it? As I said, I think it is brilliant. And on Friday I am going to post the back cover to A Princess of Landover, in preparation for the August 18th release—a back cover I think many will find very intriguing indeed! Isn't it great the age we live in?
Technology is now making the book industry truly fun to behold. Why? Because now authors can literally video themselves at super low expense, put it on the internet(s), and let fans who would never have the chance to see the author in action at an event actually watch the author! Terry visited the San Diego Comic Con last month. While there he was videoed by Suvudu as he took part in an hour long panel. Here is Part I of VII: Follow THIS LINK to watch the following six videos! Terry will also be videoed later this month when he begins his tour for A Princess of Landover. Until then, enjoy this! Terry Brooks has long been one of the foundational authors of the fantasy genre.
With his 1977 bestselling The Sword of Shannara, he helped publishers realize there was a massive base of readers out there who craved fantasy. From that time, Terry has written numerous Shannara books, each exploring something different, each growing that foundation he helped originally to create. But the Shannara series is not his only series, and many fantasy readers overlook Magic Kingdom of Landover! Magic Kingdom For Sale—Sold! began a new bestselling series for Terry in 1986. The novel was a vast departure from the three sprawling epic fantasies he had written before it, the story of Chicago lawyer Ben Holiday and his purchasing of a real magic kingdom. Right from the start Terry told his readers Ben Holiday was an alter ego of sorts, as Terry used the fictional character to discuss his transition from lawyer to full-time writer. Terry wrote five volumes about Ben Holiday, his magic kingdom of Landover, and a whole cast of unique characters—the last novel, Witches' Brew, published in 1995. After 14 years, Terry has returned to the Magic Kingdom of Landover series with the forthcoming novel, A Princess of Landover! To celebrate Terry's August 2009 return to The Magic Kingdom of Landover, Del Rey Books asked artist Steve Stone to create two new pieces of artwork to be used on collected omnibuses of the first five books in the series. The first omnibus, The Magic Kingdom of Landover: Volume I, contains the three novels Magic Kingdom For Sale—Sold!, The Black Unicorn and Wizard At Large. Volume II contains the two novels The Tangle Box and Witches' Brew. Today is March 1st. I decided to showcase the first cover: ![]() On April 1st, Del Rey Books and I will send out the first of a new series of monthly Terry Brooks newsletters. The April newsletter will include the covers to Volume II and the new book, A Princess of Landover. Additional newsletters will contain more information, interviews with Terry, several fun contests, excerpts from all the books—and some other surprises! Not signed up for Terry's newsletter? Visit www.TerryBrooks.net and use the sign-up form at the bottom of the front page or the one at the top of the News page here. It's that easy. The return to Landover has begun! Terry has finished the final edits on A Princess of Landover, the first new Magic Kingdom book in 14 years!
Magic Kingdom has always been kind of a stepchild to the rest of what Terry has done. The Shannara series dwarfs everything else -- people love their epic fantasy. The irony is Magic Kingdom is the closest thing to an autobiography Terry has ever written, and Ben Holiday is Terry Brooks in many ways. To know Terry a bit more, just read Ben Holiday. In preparation of reading the new book, I've re-read the first five books. I haven't read them in all of those 14 years and I was amazed at how much I had forgotten and how good they are, especially Wizard At Large and The Tangle Box. So, to the new Poll: Have you read the Landover novels? Have you read all five Magic Kingdom books? Only a few? If you have read them, will you be re-reading them in preparation for the next book? Or do you simply not like Landover? Speak your mind on the Forum! I'm curious how many of you are Landover fans. Labels: A Princess of Landover, Poll Wednesday, January 14, 20092009 Appearances
