October 7th, 2008 Dear National Wildlife Federation Supporter: I am writing you today to invite you to join us in the National Wildlife Federation's online auction from October 8th through October 18th. This auction will benefit program work with our nation's Great Waters. Our nation's waters—rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and coasts—have always played a vital role in the creation and development of our communities. Beyond the breathtaking beauty these water systems add to our lands, it is their role as a precious resource to all life that is essential. The health of our water directly impacts our ability to sustain the health of our towns and cities on both a social and economic level. We depend on them to provide fresh drinking water, recreational opportunities, and to serve as engines for tourism and commerce. From the mighty Mississippi to the Puget Sound, the National Wildlife Federation is committed to changing the forecast for our waters and the life that is dependent upon them. Our Great Water's work includes: Restoration of America's iconic waters — The National Wildlife Federation is dedicated to addressing the threats that put our nation's waters at risk. In particular, we are committed to securing long term, consistent funding of at least $80 billion over 20 years to restore aquatic ecosystems across the country. This includes: advocating in the Great Lakes region and across the country to replace an aging sewage infrastructure; ensuring efforts in Everglades restoration remain on track and truly achieve restoration; and helping prevent another catastrophe in Louisiana through the protection and preservation of wetlands. We're also working to create a new climate adaptation fund that will allow federal agencies to dedicate money to the Mississippi River, Puget Sound, Chesapeake Bay and other waters in an effort to make their ecosystems more resilient in the face of global warming. Wise flood plain management — Across the country, coastal and flood plain development has degraded critically important fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, open space, and groundwater recharge areas. We're working on incentives to limit new development and rebuilding on sensitive flood plains. Keystone habitat — Wetlands are particularly important aquatic systems. In addition to the water quality and flood-control benefits they provide, wetlands are the foundation for productivity in other larger aquatic systems. We will ultimately fail in our efforts to protect and restore our nation's waters without the preservation and protection of wetlands. According to the EPA, 20 million acres of wetlands are now at risk from a series of recent court decisions that have weakened the federal government's authority under the Clean Water Act. With your help, we'll ensure that this authority is fully restored. |

Well, I have money, just those books are going to go for a lot of money, and I don't have that much.
